Laboratory of Cancer Genetics
Human cancer is caused by the progressive accumulation of genetic and epigenetic events that lead to the malignant transformation of normal cells. The aims of our studies are to evaluate the role of specific methylation profiles in invasivity and metastasis processes and clinical utility for metastatic potential monitoring in breast cancer. The actual analyses in breast cancer patient`s samples are focused on genes, which are responsible for cell-cell adhesion, degradation of basement membrane and extracellular matrix and regulation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. For more deep investigation of cancer specific epigenetic changes, the role of co-operation between alterations in DNA methylation and histone modification in gene expression silencing as well as DNA methylation changes during the experimentally induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition are investigated in breast cancer cell lines models.

Identification of germline mutations in hereditary cancer diseases enables effective molecular diagnostics. Constantly increase the findings that exogenous factors play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis. Our projects aim to study the importance of the gastrointestinal microflora and especially the presence of intracellular bacteria in samples of colorectal adenomas and carcinomas.

The research interest of the Laboratory of Cancer Genetics has been focused on following topics:
• Studies of aberrant epigenetic changes in breast cancer patients and cell lines
• Studies of genetic changes in oncological patients, mainly in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
• The role of bacteria in etiology of colorectal cancer and immunodeficiency syndrome
